Studio Laura Brouwer

Since 2008, David Bergé has been guiding Walk Pieces: silent walks through city streets, where participants follow a precise path without speaking or taking photographs. The practice is rooted in the physical experience of moving through urban space, focusing on textures, bodies, and infrastructures that usually go unnoticed. Working in collaboration with Studio Remco van Bladel, the task was to design a publication that could translate this sensory experience into print.

strategy

The main objective was giving visual form to a practice defined by silence and physical presence. A book about attentive, wordless walking needs to slow the reader down in the same way a walk does.

design

The layout lets the photography of Berge's Walk Pieces carry the experience. Careful typesetting and spacing gives the texts room to breathe, creating a reading pace that mirrors the deliberate slowed down pace of the walks themselves. The design stays in the background while guiding the reader through the material.

insight

The project emphasized that book design can be an exercise in pacing. Where a reader slows down or pauses, is shaped as much by design decisions as by Berge's Walk Pieces itself. A book about attentive walking asked for that same quality of attention in its design.

deliverables

A Walk in High Resolution reflects the guided silent walks through urban areas. Participating in a Walk Piece or your personal experience of reading this book are the only valid materializations of David Bergé’s temporary works.
